If your vehicle has been in an accident — even one that was properly repaired — it's typically worth less than an equivalent vehicle with a clean history. That gap is called diminished value, and it's one of the most misunderstood topics in Canadian auto insurance.
What is diminished value?
Diminished value generally falls into three categories:
- Immediate diminished value — the drop in value the moment damage occurs, before any repair.
- Inherent diminished value — the permanent stigma a documented accident history carries, even after a perfect repair.
- Repair-related diminished value — additional value lost due to the quality of the repair work or use of aftermarket parts.
Why diminished value is complicated in Ontario
This is the part most articles skip: Ontario's no-fault auto insurance system significantly limits when you can actually recover diminished value. In most circumstances, you cannot sue an at-fault driver directly for this type of loss — the no-fault framework routes claims through your own insurer instead, and standard policies generally treat diminished value as an indirect loss that isn't automatically covered.
That doesn't mean documenting diminished value is pointless. It can still matter if:
- You're disputing a total-loss settlement offer you believe undervalues your pre-accident vehicle
- Your situation involves an uninsured or underinsured motorist claim
- The accident happened out of province, under different rules
- You simply want a documented, defensible value before selling or trading a previously-repaired vehicle
How an independent appraisal helps
A diminished value appraisal estimates your vehicle's value immediately before the accident and compares it to its documented value after repair, using comparable sales and a clear methodology. That gives you something concrete to bring to your insurer, your broker, or a lawyer — rather than an unsupported opinion about what the car "should" be worth.
Getting a diminished value appraisal
To prepare an accurate report, we typically need your accident date, repair estimate/invoice, insurance claim number (if applicable), and current photos of the vehicle. See our diminished value appraisal service for full details and pricing.
